What is Tamper Evident Tape?

Tamper evident tape is designed to provide extra protection and security when transporting large products. When shipping items like cartons, crates, and large boxes, tamper evident tape keeps your items sealed and prevents them from being prematurely opened. Once the tape is removed, some indication will be left behind alerting the recipient that the item has been opened. Typically the indicator takes the form of a hard-to-remove residue that states “ VOID OPENED”, providing a clear visual indicator that the item has been previously accessed. An untampered seal assures the customer that the items they purchase are safe, and haven’t been handled by anyone after being packaged.

Who uses Tamper evident tape?

Potential users of TET includes:

  • Pharmacy/ pharmaceutical – to verify product integrity and patient safety.
  • Online sellers – to avoid theft and replacement of products during shipment and in warehouse.
  • Grocery delivery – to ensure the integrity of items from packing to final delivery.
  • Restaurant delivery – to ensures that food remains fresh and haven’t been tampered by third-party deliverers after being packaged.
  • Critical shipment – to protect packages containing valuable itemssuch as electronics or jewellery.

Some businesses prefer a personalized message or logo instead of the standard “void opened” pattern. Anything that cannot be easily copied provides an extra layer of protection.

Advantages over normal tape

1 Prevent theft – The most obvious benefit of tamper evident packaging is that it prevents your products from being opened by unauthorised person within a warehouse and during transportation. A person can’t just open a box and reseal it with regular tape. The box would immediately show a void message indicating it’s been tampered with.

2 Maintains a chain of custody – In today’s complex supply chain, multiple people throughout the entire chain are handling packages before they reach their final destination. This makes it hard to know who tampered your package and when. By using tamper evident tape you’ll know in which stage of supply chain your product was tampered whether it being warehouse and during transit.

3 Protects the brand – Today’s era of online have given rise to the issue of counterfeiting. Branded clothing, expensive electronics and equipment are at more risk. A person can replace your original products with the products of poor quality, which negatively affects the brand’s reputation and can lead to poor public relations and unwanted lawsuits. Tamper evident tape is merely a small investment to protect your brand and products from the risk of counterfeiting.

4 Enhances the customer experience – When your consumers receive damaged products or don’t receive the complete shipment, they’ll have bad experience and would contact your customer service department. As per survey half of the customers would not like to purchase again from you after even a single bad experience. On the other hand, untampered package give them assurance that the package they received have not been altered by anyone.

5 Enhanced company image – Some products like food and beverages, pharmaceutical products, dietary supplements or medical devices need extra safety measures because the manufacturers of such items often have to follow standard imposed by law. Using tamper evident tapes shows that you are a concerned company that takes packaging security seriously and makes sure that the products are safe to use.

6 Reduce Cost – As per survey, an average of 15% of the orders are replaced and returned by the customers because of receiving damaged and counterfeited items.  Replacing the missing items and paying shipping fees for the replaced items increases the cost to seller comparatively lot more than they pay for tamper evident tapes.

Ask yourself: – What is the true cost of customer returns compared to the cost of securing packages with tamper-evident security packing tape?

Cost of ordinary tape instead of tamper evident tape

·        Cost of all goods lost because of theft and damage.

·        Cost of replacing missing item and paying shipping fees for the replaced order in case of theft.

·        Cost of replacing original product with the fake product in case of counterfeiting.

·        Cost of lost revenue due to product returned.

·        Cost of lost goodwill.

·        Cost of probable lawsuits in case of suppling false products.

It’s a simple cost-benefit analysis that shows how a reasonably priced tamper evident tape would save you from lots of cost.

It is also a great way to make your business stand out from the rest.  Also, find out what your competitors are doing. Are they already using this kind of tape? Do you have an opportunity to be the first on the market or are you already behind the curve?

Do your own math.
